Surgical Excavation® and Utility Safety Services

“Our company is under contract to maintain, repair, and service a wide variety of buried utility systems all over the Northeast. Excavation is a necessary part of everything w do, and safety is always our first and most critical priority. Orion-SurgEx  is always on call to support our work crews any time of day or night, particularly when we are challenged with opening a busy Manhattan street corner to repair a leaking or damaged utility. On numerous occasions, we have also run into contamination from leaking tanks or pipes underground, which complicates an already difficult task.  Orion-SurgEx is the one company we can call who will open the road, expose the various criss-crossing utilities, suppress and control any hazardous conditions, and maintain the excavation safely while we make the necessary repairs. They have basically become an extension of our in-house operation……and things have changed for the better since we began using them on our most difficult projects……”

We manufacture packaging for the pharmaceutical industry, and one of our toluene process tanks leaked into the ground, and had been leaking for an unknown period of time. A row of 100-year old oak trees on our grounds had suddenly died one spring, and tipped us off there was a problem. We found the leak, but excavation or drilling was impossible because of the location, and intricate network of buried systems running between plant buildings. Orion-SurgEx safely mapped the areal distribution of the leaked chemical, and installed an underground network of vapor extraction points, and reduced toluene levels to acceptable levels in a just a few short months. There was no safe way to complete this work until we discussed the problem, and found our safest solution using Orion….”

Orion-SurgEx has responded to several midnight emergencies where a heating oil tank has failed, or was accidently overfilled during delivery. A few incidents caused several hundred gallons of heating oil to leak under basement slabs and into footing drains and basement sumps. We used to use jackhammers and shovels to dig the contaminated soil out of basements and from under slabs and footing drains. It was very time consuming, expensive, and ineffective.Orion-SurgEx has effectively changed the way we resolve these problems, and restore a customer’s home to a livable condition quickly. They can basically go anywhere and excavate, even if it’s inside a building, basement, or crawl space, which is often the case. The contaminated soil is stacked neatly in sealed drums outside, ready for disposal and handled only once during the cleanup….We haven’t seen a safer or more efficient way to handle this kind of all-too-common problem……”

Site Remediation and Treatment System Services

We routinely develop industrial properties that are being converted to residential or mixed-use commercial applications, and always find surprises during the site work that weren’t caught in the engineering studies prior to development. We can’t always stop the project to “study” or engineer a solution, because time is money, and we’re typically under contract to deliver the space to our customers. There hasn’t been a problem yet we couldn’t solve quickly with the guys atOrion-SurgEx. They’ve been around their business so long, virtually anything we’ve showed them was a matter of routine. They either have, or know where to get the resources they need to solve our problems, and keep the owners and regulators happy. We don’t bother calling anyone else.”

“Our bulk terminal has had groundwater recovery and treatment systems running forever. The terminal will be 75 years old next year, and the old way of disposing of waste products years ago like tank bottoms and water entrained fuels has made it necessary to clean up the groundwater and soil to meet regulations. Orion-SurgEx know their way around these systems better than anyone we’ve ever had running our treatment equipment, and continuously upgrades our existing systems to improve performance and keep maintenance costs low. We even have a system running on solar energy, where electricity just isn’t available…..”

“ Installing soil-vapor extraction systems for underground spills of volatile organic compounds used to involve either drilling or excavating to place vertical and horizontal venting systems in the affected areas. Orion-SurgEx has developed an entirely more efficient, safer, and higher-performance process to install these systems without creating a sediment “smear” zone across pore spaces in the soil that carry vapors to the ejection system. We won’t install systems for our major clients any other way, now that this methodology has been put into practice, with excellent results…..”
